– SSN (The Student Welfare Organisation of Southeast Norway) is proud that we are finally getting started on the construction of the 232 new student housing units at Kjølnes on Campus Porsgrunn, says Hans Erik Stormoen, CEO of SSN, after the start of construction on Monday, October 16, 2023.
The project is the first to be built in accordance with SSN's current strategic plan, which means significantly stricter environmental requirements.
– Several measures have been introduced to increase biodiversity in the project, and sustainable energy solutions in the form of geothermal energy wells and solar panels as heating sources. This is according to Christian Berg, Director of Infrastructure and Property Development at SSN.
He adds that the proximity to the campus means a significant reduction in the need for transportation to and from the campus for those living in the homes.
In addition, there is ample bicycle parking for all residents and a shared swap shed to encourage increased reuse of articles and furniture between residents.
A target of a 30% reduction in CO2 emissions compared with a reference building has been set.
Renewable energy sources will be used, primarily through the establishment of geothermal wells and solar cell systems on roof surfaces.
Energy from ventilation will be utilized.
Establishment of green lungs/outdoor areas.
Good social sustainability will be ensured through a good indoor climate and a living environment with social meeting places indoors and outdoors.
SSN works towards BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environment Assessment Method): A comprehensive and international environmental certification system for buildings, which measures the sustainability qualities of the building - even if the project is not to be certified.
HRL Entreprenør AS has signed a contract with SSN for the construction of the new homes. The contract has a value of approximately NOK 300 million including VAT.
– We had good experiences with HRL Entreprenør during the interaction and construction phase of the student housing at Campus Bø, and we are also very pleased with the interaction phase we have now been through, says SSN project manager Lisbeth Varpe.
