Saturday 15. Feb, 16:30 - 21:00
Kommer, Bø
February 15th there will be a seed course with Andrew McMillion.
Have you wondered how plants are pollinated? How new plant varieties are created? Have you wondered why both broccoli and Chinese cabbage are the same species, Brassica oleracea? Have you ever wondered how new vegetables are developed and multiplied?
In this course, you will gain insight into how to take care of cultivars or keep them "cultivar". You will gain enough knowledge about the 8 most widely cultivated plant genera to be confident that the seeds you reproduce are of high enough quality to use and share. We will also learn about how to get perennial seeds to wake from dormancy via "stratification" as well as what you need in terms of knowledge to keep varieties robust and avoid genetic depression. Today, many old crops are about to be forgotten, and they are not used in modern industrial agriculture.
Kvann-kunnskap og vern av nyttevekster i Norge is a national interest organization. They work to preserve plants that have had long traditions and are adapted to the climate and growing conditions in Norway. Andrew is a member of the plant science committee in KVANN and is a seed fanatic. He has taken care of seeds from over 100 special plant varieties. In this course, he will share knowledge he has learned through growing and saving his own seeds.
