In ABOUT DRY GRASSES, we meet the art teacher Samet, who is stationed in a small village school in Anatolia, the harsh eastern part of Turkey. Samet is no longer quite young, and he struggle to thrive in the desolate place It's a boring, harsh climate, and he lacks challenges in his profession. He dreams of relocation to the bustling cultural life of Istanbul, but is thrown into a deep personal crisis when he is accused of inappropriate behavior towards students.
This is the start of an intricate and unpredictable story that thematizes both MeToo and current issues related to the teacher's room for manoeuvre in the encounter with students.
Director Nuri Bilge Ceylan has developed a perfect, distinctive style. ABOUT DRY GRASSES is a lingering film that takes time for discussions, confrontations and contemplative melancholy.
Those who are willing to invest in the good three hours the film lasts, will get a cinema experience they will not be able to forget. The salon guest is Gunvald Ims, who is a translator and associate professor at USN, with a master's degree in Turkish and a doctorate in Turkish languages. He will give a short talk about Turkish film, before the screening.
