About the buildings:

Vestsiden student accommodation, built in 2019, consists of two buildings - one in solid wood and one with a brick facade - with a total of 155 housing units.

The wooden building has been named Silva, which means forest. The name also makes you think of silver and the silver mines for which Kongsberg is so well known. The building with the brick facade has been named Monti, which means mountains. The names refer to both their construction materials and the surrounding landscapes.

Silva is four floors high, while Monti has three floors. 

The buildings consists of the following unit types:

  • 50 single units (15 m²) with private bathroom and shared kitchen.
  • 6 HC single units (20 m²) with private bathroom and shared kitchen.
  • 85 single units (19-20 m²) with both private bathroom and kitchen.
  • 4 HC single units (26-29 m²) with both private bathroom and kitchen.
  • 10 couple's apartments with separate bedroom, private bathroom and kitchen/living room (30 m²).

All residents in flats with shared kitchens have their own fridge and kitchen cabinets in the shared kitchen.

Practical information about Vestsiden Student Housing:

You can find the bicycle and ski storage room in Silvas basement. Here you can padlock bicycles, skies and snowboard, or use one of the storage lockers to store your skies and snowboard. Remember to bring your own padlock!

You can easily unlock doors via "My key card" on My page. Here you have the opportunity to unlock all the doors you have access to through your rental agreement with SSN. It is also this feature you can use to open the door when guests arrive.

Electricity is included in the rent. 

The building is built as a passive house (with low energy standard) and has its own geo well that provides energy for ventilation heating and hot water.

Both buildings has an elevator.

Take a minute and read about fire safety and the fire alarm system at Vestsiden student accommodation. 

You will receive a key card (free of charge) when you move into your accommodation.  

Front doors: Hold the card in front of the device reader. It will flash green. Enter your four-digit code. The door unlocks.

Inner doors: Hold the card to the reader. Press the door handle and open the door when you get a green light and a single beep. The door locks automatically when closed, but you can always open it from the inside with the doorknob.

When green and red lights flash alternately: low battery voltage, batteries must be replaced immediately. You may also see red and green flashing lights simultaneously. If you do, please let us know that the batteries need to be replaced.

NB! Do not make holes in, or write on the key card – it may stop working.

In addition you can easily unlock doors via "My key card" on My page. Here you have the oppurtunity to unlock all the doors you have access to through your rental agreement with SSN. It is also this feature you can use to open the door when guests arrive.

We recommend that you always bring your key card when you leave your room. Opening the door digitally will not work if the internet in the building is down.

Remember: All key cards must be returned to SSN when you move out of your student housing. A fee will be charged if the key card is not returned. See the price list.

The buildings are surrounded by attractive common outdoor areas with a barbecue site for everyone living in the buildings. In addition, there is a public park right next to the accommodations.

There are two HC spots on ground level, but no other allocated parking. There is a parking basement in Silva, but this will not belong to the student accommodation except for bicycle and ski storage.

There are several parking lots/garages in the neighbourhood which offers parking spaces for long term rent, for instance at Skauløkka Parkering (with a student discount) or Sandsværveien 16 Parkering.

In your shared kitchen you will find a Quooker, where you get boiling water (110 °C) directly from the faucet.   

The laundry room with washing machines and tumble dryers is to be found on the ground floor in Silva. You do not need to bring your own detergent, as the machines have a "dosing system" - which means that it automatically fills with detergent. The detergents are hypoallergenic.

Do your laundry with appWash

With this solution everything is done with an app on your phone (you can also use a web site).

It is currently not possible to reserve machines with this solution., but you can use the app to see if there are any machines available. You will also receive a notification from your app when your laundry is finished.

Inside the shared laundry room in Silva you will find a swap shelf. Here you can leave things you no longer need, or find things you need for your dorm. It is not permitted to leave furniture or textiles.

Waste disposals are sorted and thrown in buried waste-igloos outside the building. Remember to recycle! Electrical waste can be placed in marked can in the laundry. 

Passive house with geo well

Electricity is included in the rent. 

The building is built as a passive house (energy efficient) and has its own geo well that provides energy for ventilation heating, hot water and heating of common areas.


The student housing is built to be energy-efficient to retain heat during the cold season. There is no cooling installed on the property and in the summer months it can get hot inside if it is hot outside.

Internet via cable


A router from SSN has been placed in your apartment. To use a wired connection, you must connect the device you wish to use through this.

We recommend that you use network cables of the standard cat5e or newer.

Priv-ssid: Private wireless network

Private WiFi

SSID and password for your personal wireless network can be found under the internet tab on My page.

SSN external

This wireless network is reserved for tenants who do not have an account to use eduroam. If you are not a student or employee at USN you will find the password under the Internet tab on my page.

WiFi: Eduroam

This is the same wireless network that you will find on campus (in addition to a number of other locations). To log in to eduroam, you must use your student account ([email protected] + password). You obtain your student account from the university at the start of studies. More information about student accounts can be found on the USN website.


Eduroam uses wpa-enterprise for authentication. This means you need both a username and password to log in. Many devices such as smart TV, Chromecast, Apple TV and gaming consoles do not support this and therefore cannot be used on Eduroam.

WiFi public areas

These wireless networks are also available in public areas (kitchen/lounge/hallway).

Key card and unlocking of doors from app/My page

Lock yourself in with your mobile phone

You can easily lock in via "My key card" on My page on mobile phone/desktop or via the Student Sørøst app (My key card is found under the service for Student housing). My key card gives you the opportunity to unlock all doors you have access to through your tenancy with SSN. It is also this function that you can use to lock in guests.


NB! We recommend that you always take your key card with you when you leave the dormitory. Opening from the web will not work if you lack internet or My page is down.

Tip - buy an extra key card at SSN's service office! There are snap locks on the doors and it is easy to lock out. An extra key card can be kept with a fellow student.

Key card:

You will receive one key card (free of charge) when you move into your student housing unit. This is how it works:
Outer door:
Hold the card close to the card reader. It should flash green in the reader. Enter your four-digit code. The door is unlocked.

Interior doors:

Hold the card close to the reader unit. Press down on the handle and open the door when you get a green light and a single beep. The door locks automatically when it is closed, but can always be opened from the inside with the door turner.

NB! Do not make holes in or write on the key card - it may stop working.

Error message in the card reader on the dormitory/apartment door:

Green and red light flashing alternately: low battery voltage, the batteries must be replaced immediately. If the battery voltage is low, it can also happen that red and green flash at the same time. Report on Errors and deficiencies on My page if you need a battery replacement.

When you move out, you return the key card, feel free to use one of our drop boxes. ATTENTION! A fee is triggered if you don´t return your key card. See the price list.

My keycard: Digital key in app or on My page at ssn.no

You can lock yourself in both with a physical key card and digitally via My key card in the Student Sørøst app or on My page from ssn.no.

The key card function is activated from 1 pm on the day your contract starts. Remember that you MUST collect the physical key card in addition.

Subject to errors in inventory. In addition, some inventory may apply to common areas and not the individual unit.

All keys and key cards must be delivered by 10 am on the last day of the contract.

The housing unit must be ready for handover (emptied, cleared and cleaned).

You can either deliver the key in the service office or in one of our dropboxes.
