The history of Palestine and Israel in modern times has as its starting point the Palestinian society in the decades before 1900, and follows the history of this geographical area up to the present day. The long span breaks with a common periodization of Palestine's - and therefore also Israel's history. The ambition to encompass the entire geographical area, and both Israeli and Palestinian history, also breaks with traditional thematic boundaries. The book thus provides a new, more complex, and deeper understanding of social change processes in the area and of the struggle between Jewish and Palestinian nation-building in the period before and after the establishment of the state of Israel.
