Want to live here?

Although the building is still under construction, you can already apply for a dorm or apartment in Campus Porsgrunn Student Housing. Students who are existing residents in SSN's student housing are at the top of the waiting list.

NB! The images you see of the project are illustrations and should only be seen as examples of furnishings. Colours and solutions will also differ from the finished interior.

About the building:

Campus Porsgrunn student housing is under construction and will be taken over by SSN on 1 May 2025. The first residents will move in from 15 May 2025.

The building is constructed in concrete, is six storeys high and will contain a total of 232 student housing units. There will be two entrances, A and B.

The building will contain:

In addition, there will be:

  • A total of six common rooms, including a roof terrace!
  • Swap room and book-swap shelf.
  • Communal laundry room.
  • Bicycle parking with charging facilities.
  • Beautiful, green outdoor areas with trees and seating.

Practical information about Campus Porsgrunn Student Housing:

Bicycles/scooters can be stored in a large, built-in area in the B building, with access directly from the outdoor area. Here you can store your bike dry and safe, with access via an access control system. Bicycles/scooters can be charged, and there is a separate locker for charging the bike battery. There are also facilities for washing and ‘tinkering’ with your bike.

There are three HC spaces in the car park, two of which can be used for charging electric cars. These are reserved for vehicles with a valid parking permit.

via My Page under My Rental Agreement and Apply for Additional Products.

There are 19 numbered parking spaces available for rent, four are equipped with charging facilities. The current price can be seen in the price list and applications for parking spaces are made on My page under My tenancy and Apply for additional products.

Apart from the mentioned parking spaces, there are no additional parking spaces associated with the building.

Campus Porsgrunn student housing will have a total of six common rooms (some of these are only for residents living in single units with private kitchen and bathroom). There will be a large common room with a kitchen for everyone on the ground floor, as well as a beautiful roof terrace on the fourth floor that all residents can use, with a common room and a cinema room just inside.

You can lock in via your mobile and "My key card" on My page or by using the Student Sørøst-app. Here you have the opportunity to unlock all doors you have access to through your tenancy with SSN. It is also this feature that you can use to lock in guests. Read more about using the mobile phone as a key.

NB! We recommend that you always take your key card with you when you leave the dormitory. Opening from the web will not work if you lack internet or My page is down.

You will receive a key card (free of charge) when you move into your accommodation. This is how the card works:

EXTERNAL DOORS:

  • Present keycard to the card reader. Enter your four-digit code to open the door.
  • From the inside, you press the open switch to unlock and open the door.

  • The doors have automatic opening and closing.

CORRIDOR/COMMON DOORS:

  • Present keycard to the reader and the door should open - no code is required.
  • From the inside, you press the open switch to unlock and open the door.

UNIT AND APARTMENT DOORS:

How do I enter and lock the door to my unit/apartment?

  • Present keycard to the card reader, enter your four-digit code, and the door opens.
  • The door remains unlocked until you lock it with the keycard and code from the outside.
  • The light flashes to red on the card reader when it goes into locked position.
  • When you have locked the door from the outside, it opens from the inside when you depress the handle.
  • See the video that describes how the key card system and the lock works.

Tips for using keycards and code:

  • If you enter the code too quickly, it does not register.
  • If you unlock from outside, and scan your keycard within few seconds to lock the door again, it might not be necessary to enter your code.
  • Hold the keycard in your other hand when entering the code. The card reader is sensitive and can read the card twice if you hold it too close when entering the code.
  • Does the display blink yellow every 5 seconds? This means the battery must be replaced. Log on to My page. Report this under “Faults and defects,” and our operations department will assist you.
  • Please do not write on the keycards. If you puncture the cards they will no longer work.
  • When locking your door remember to NOT push the door handle down while closing. The system will be overruled and the door will still be unlocked.

Locked yourself out or lost your keycard?

Remember: All key cards must be returned to SSN when you move out of your student housing. A fee will be charged if the key card is not returned. See the price list.

There are two lifts, one at each entrance.

  • Campus Porsgrunn Student Housing is located in the centre of USN campus Porsgrunn.
  • The building surrounds the Fabrikken student centre, so it's a short walk to both lectures and social life.
  • It takes about five minutes to walk to the nearest grocery store (Rema1000 Vallermyrene).
  • The nearest bus station is the University USN Porsgrunn (about 200 metres from the campus).
  • The nearest train station is Porsgrunn Station, about 15 minutes' walk from the campus.

On the ground floor, there will be lovely communal outdoor areas with green spaces, table tennis, meeting places and barbecue areas for social gatherings. In addition, you'll find a roof terrace on the 4th floor with barbecue and seating.

The shared laundry room with washing machines and tumble dryers will be centrally located at the B entrance and is available to all residents. Here you will also find an ironing board you can use if needed. It is not permitted to hang up laundry in the laundry room.

You don't need to bring your own detergent, as the machines have a ‘dosing system’ - that is, detergent is automatically refilled. The detergents are hypoallergenic.

You use the app appWash to pay for and use washer/dryer:

1. Download the app appWash by Miele or use the desktop version online.
2. Register in the app
3. Top up your balance

At the laundry room:

4. Select machine
5. Select programme
6. Load laundry and start the machine

You can check if there is a machine available and also book a machine in the app. You can also get notifications via the app when your laundry is done (remember to allow notifications from appWash).

Do you have questions about appWash? Check out their FAQ.

Or contact appWash directly: [email protected]

The building has 22 storage rooms that can be rented by residents (see price list for current price). Each stall is approximately 1 x 1.5 metres and is locked with a private padlock. You will find the stalls to the right of the lift in entrance A.

Once you have been allocated accommodation at Campus Porsgrunn Student Housing and have signed your contract, you can apply to rent a unit via My Page. Due to limited capacity, there may be a waiting list to be allocated a storage room.

There will be both a book exchange shelf in the common room on the ground floor and a separate swap room in a room inside the shared laundry room (also on the ground floor). Here you can leave things you no longer need or find things for your dorm. It is not permitted to leave furniture or textiles.

Waste is sorted and disposed of in buried waste bins outside the building. Remember to sort! Electrical waste can be placed in labelled containers at the laundry.

Passive house with geothermal heating and solar cells on the roof

Electricity/energy is included in the rent.

The building has a low-energy standard (passive house) and has its own geothermal system that supplies energy for heating and hot water. There are also solar cells on the roof that produce consumer electricity and power for electric car chargers. The building is not self-sufficient in electricity, so please help us save electricity.

The student housing is built energy-efficiently to retain heat during the cold season. During the summer months, it can get hot inside if it's hot outside. The geothermal wells will allow for some cooling on the hottest days of summer.

Fire alarm system

It is very important for your safety and the safety of others that you have familiarised yourself with the fire alarm system in your student residence. You can find information about the fire alarm system that applies to you on My page under Fire information. It is important that you read this and tick that the information has been read and understood.

There are also notices in the student accommodation that provide you with information.

Cable in router

Internet via cable

A router from SSN has been placed in your apartment. To use a wired connection, you must connect the device you wish to use through this.

We recommend that you use network cables of the standard cat5e or newer.

Priv-ssid: Private wireless network

Private WiFi

SSID and password for your personal wireless network can be found under the internet tab on My page.

SSN external

This wireless network is reserved for tenants who do not have an account to use eduroam. If you are not a student or employee at USN you will find the password under the Internet tab on my page.

WiFi: Eduroam

This is the same wireless network that you will find on campus (in addition to a number of other locations). To log in to eduroam, you must use your student account ([email protected] + password). You obtain your student account from the university at the start of studies. More information about student accounts can be found on the USN website.

Eduroam uses wpa-enterprise for authentication. This means you need both a username and password to log in. Many devices such as smart TV, Chromecast, Apple TV and gaming consoles do not support this and therefore cannot be used on Eduroam.

Key card and unlocking of doors from app/My page

Lock yourself in with your mobile phone

You can easily lock in via "My key card" on My page on mobile phone/desktop or via the Student Sørøst app (My key card is found under the service for Student housing). My key card gives you the opportunity to unlock all doors you have access to through your tenancy with SSN. It is also this function that you can use to lock in guests.

NB! We recommend that you always take your key card with you when you leave the dormitory. Opening from the web will not work if you lack internet or My page is down.

Tip - buy an extra key card at SSN's service office! There are snap locks on the doors and it is easy to lock out. An extra key card can be kept with a fellow student.

Key card:

You will receive one key card (free of charge) when you move into your student housing unit. This is how it works:
Outer door:
Hold the card close to the card reader. It should flash green in the reader. Enter your four-digit code. The door is unlocked.

Interior doors:

Hold the card close to the reader unit. Press down on the handle and open the door when you get a green light and a single beep. The door locks automatically when it is closed, but can always be opened from the inside with the door turner.

NB! Do not make holes in or write on the key card - it may stop working.

Error message in the card reader on the dormitory/apartment door:

Green and red light flashing alternately: low battery voltage, the batteries must be replaced immediately. If the battery voltage is low, it can also happen that red and green flash at the same time. Report on Errors and deficiencies on My page if you need a battery replacement.

When you move out, you return the key card, feel free to use one of our drop boxes. ATTENTION! A fee is triggered if you don´t return your key card. See the price list.

All keys and key cards must be delivered by 10 am on the last day of the contract.

The housing unit must be ready for handover (emptied, cleared and cleaned).

You can either deliver the key in the service office or in one of our dropboxes.

Read more about returning the key and find location for dropbox on your campus here.

Quooker

In your shared kitchen you will find a Quooker, where you get boiling water (110 °C) directly from the faucet. This means that you do not have to bring a kettle with you if you belong to a shared kitchen.
